Modern Family beauty Sarah Hyland has opened up about her health struggles in the newest issue of Seventeen magazine. In the June/July 2012 issue, Sarah shared her story on her battle with kidney dysplasia, and how her family, friends, and boyfriend helped her get through it.
Sarah has had kidney dysplasia since she was just nine years old, and now the 21-year-old star underwent a kidney transplant last month after her condition kept getting worse. Her father even donated his kidney to her!
“You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney! But it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.” Sarah said in her interview.
She also revealed how her boyfriend (actor Matt Prokop) has supported her. “He helps me with my medication and takes me to doctor appointments and all the stuff that I need to do to take care of myself. Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it. I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me.”
Despite the fact that she was sick, Sarah took no time off work before the surgery. She shared with GMA what it was like with kidney dysplasia while she was working long hours on the set of Modern Family.
“I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn’t get, like, 12 hours of sleep, It felt, like — It felt, like, none at all,” she explained. Sarah revealed that she tried her best to make her character Hayley as still as possible. In scenes, she would often have it so her character was constantly sitting down and texting, or leaning on something. “You know, if you’re sick, you still go to work. And in between takes, you sit down, or you lay your head down or something,”
Now that Sarah’s surgery is over and she’s on the road to recovery, what is she most thankful for?
“I have a second chance at life, not a lot of people get that.”
