Warner Bros. Television Respond to ‘Riverdale’ star KJ Apa’s Car Crash

Posted on 2 min read 31 views

After news broke yesterday that Riverdale actor KJ Apa was involved in a late-night car accident after falling asleep at the wheel while driving home after working a 16-hour day, Warner Bros. Television has spoken out about the allegations that the cast and crew are required to provide their own transportation to and from set even though they frequently work into the early morning hours.

“The safety of the cast and crew on all of our productions is of paramount importance to the Studio,” a studio spokesperson said. “Productions adhere to the Screen Actors Guild–mandated turnaround time of 12 hours from wrap time to next day call time for cast members. In accordance with industry standard policy, if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, the Studio will provide a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request. This is communicated to all cast and crew, both in writing and verbally, at the beginning of production and is reiterated continuously throughout the duration of production.”

“First and foremost, we are extremely grateful that KJ Apa was uninjured during his recent accident,” the studio said. “Secondarily, we want to specifically address the characterization that conditions on the set of ‘Riverdale’ are of concern.”

“We have a large cast of series regulars, and our actors do not work every day. On the day of the accident, KJ worked 14.2 hours. The previous day he worked 2.5 hours, and the day before that he worked 7.7 hours. KJ has repeatedly been informed about making production aware if he is tired or feels unsafe, and if so, either a ride or hotel room will be provided for him. The accident occurred last Thursday. Additionally, it is untrue that KJ was taken to the hospital. He was treated by first responders on the scene and released by them. We also sent a doctor to his home later that same day for a follow-up to confirm his well-being.”

Variety has also reported that SAG-AFTRA, a union for American actors, will be investigating the conditions of the Riverdale set.

“This is an extremely troubling situation and we are deeply concerned about the safety of performers on the ‘Riverdale’ set,” the union said. “We are sending a team to Vancouver to review the circumstances surrounding safety issues affecting performers on this production. We have no further comment at this time.”

Riverdale season 2 will premiere Oct. 11 on The CW.

Riverdale’s KJ Apa Crashes Car after 16-Hour Work Day, Sparks Fight for Better Working Conditions

Posted on 1 min read 71 views

Riverdale actor KJ Apa was involved in a late-night car crash last week after falling asleep at the wheel after a 16-hour work day filming on location outside of Vancouver, Canada.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, KJ was making his 45 minute drive home after midnight when he fell asleep and crashed into a light pole, destroying the passenger side of his car. KJ was taken to a local hospital for observation, and was discharged without serious injuries.

The crash has reportedly started mass protests on the Riverdale set, with the cast and crew fighting for better working conditions since the show regularly shoots until the early morning hours and does not provide transportation to and from the set. However, while Warner Brothers TV does not provide transportation, the studio will reportedly pay for taxis or nearby hotel stays for actors if they feel it is unsafe to drive.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead, was planning to catch a ride home with KJ that night, but the actor changed his plans last minute. Cole has since asked that the show provides transportation for the cast when they are required to work late hours.

A call between the Riverdale cast’s representatives and Warner Bros. executives will happen on Friday to discuss the issue.

Riverdale is currently filming its second season in Vancouver, Canada, and will be premiering on October 11.

The CW is Developing a ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Series

Posted on 1 min read 31 views

Following up the success of Riverdale, the CW is now working on bringing Sabrina the Teenage Witch to the small-screen!

According to Variety, the CW and Warner Brothers Television are developing a new hour-long drama based on the Archie Comics series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for the 2018-2019 season.

The series will reportedly reimagine the adventures of Sabrina in a dark coming-of-age story that features “horror, the occult, and witchcraft.”

Variety also reports that the series “is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like ‘Rosemary’s Baby‘ and ‘The Exorcist,’ and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

Riverdale show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacassa will write and executive produce the series.

Check out what each cast member had to say about what’s going on with their characters in Season 2 below!

KJ Apa for Entertainment Weekly

When Riverdale picks up in Season 2, Archie will be reeling from the aftermath of his father’s shooting and will be out for revenge — a storyline that’s new to KJ and has pushed his acting further than ever before:

“To be fair, I read that first episode of the second season and I was thinking I don’t know if I’m good enough to do this,” KJ said. “I’m a new actor. I’m new to this kind of material and I was cushioning myself. I really have learned a lot this season and I think I’ve shot some of the best stuff I’ve ever done.”

Cole Sprouse for Entertainment Weekly

As for Jughead, the Riverdale narrator will be caught between his new life at South Side High and his old life, and may potentially even join up with the Serpents.

“He undergoes a kind of radical vulnerability and change,” Cole said. “His morality is going to be really tested. It’s one of those things where Jughead is the perspective character. We see the world through his lens. He’s the soul of Riverdale. So in my own way and for the audience, whatever happens to Jughead can be seen as the world in total.”

Camila Mendes for Entertainment Weekly

Veronica’s life is also changing in the new season with the return of her father Hiram (Mark Consuelos).

“She wants to be respected as a member of the family and neither Hiram nor Hermione [Marisol Nichols] are allowing to be part of that,” Camila said. “They have a plan for Riverdale and they keep it very secret.”

Lili Reinhart for Entertainment Weekly

Betty Cooper will also go through some rough times in the new season, with a strained relationship with Jughead and this season’s new mystery.

“Not only is Betty dealing with the separation between her and her boyfriend but being in the middle of something she completely did not ask for,” Lili said. “She’s so young. Your heart goes out to Betty in season two. She gets put in the middle of a sh– storm.”

Ashleigh Murray for Entertainment Weekly

Josie will be a full-fledged member of the gang in season 2, and the budding singer could also be looking to go solo in the new season:

“There is talk of possibly Josie exploring the option of going a solo route. It’s gonna cause some issues if that does come up,” said Ashleigh.

Madelaine Petsch for Entertainment Weekly

As for Cheryl, the fiery redhead will be rising from the ashes of her burnt home this season:

“I think a lot of people read her trying to burn the house down as her breaking but it was her pulling herself together and telling her mom she’s not going to take any more crap and she’s in charge now,” said Madelaine. “She’s hell hath no fury like Cheryl scorned.”

Casey Cott for Entertainment Weekly

Kevin Keller will also be a regular character this season: “Betty kinda left Kevin hanging a little last season,” Casey said. “I think he’s lonely and it’s time maybe he says something.”

Riverdale Showrunner on Season 2: “It’s almost like every force in the universe is out to pry Bughead apart”

Posted on 1 min read 24 views

With just a month to go until the return of the CW’s Riverdale, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has revealed a little of what fans can expect to come in the second season of the series.

In an interview with TV Line, Aguirre-Sacasa said that the hunt for the gunman who shot Archie’s dad “leads into darker chapters of Riverdale’s history and puts all of our characters on the defensive.”

Season 2 will also introduce Veronica’s father Hiram Lodge (played by Mark Consuelos), which will introduce new mysteries into the mix. “Is he reformed? Is he still up to his dastardly deeds? Is he somehow connected to the Fred gunman?” Aguirre-Sacasa said.

As for the fan-favourite Betty and Jughead (“Bughead”) pairing, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that the couple will face their own challenges now that they’re at different schools: “It’s almost like every force in the universe is out to pry Bughead apart,” he says, adding that Archie and Veronica might experience some issues of their own. “There are going to be problems coming in multiple different directions, besieging both of our couples.”

Camila Mendes talks playing Veronica on ‘Riverdale’: “It was the perfect fit”

Posted on 3 min read 120 views

Actress Camila Mendes recently chatted with Glamour magazine, where she opened up on her role as Veronica on the CW’s new show Riverdale, how she relates to her character, and who she wants Veronica to explore a relationship with.

During the interview, Camila discussed how she felt about playing Veronica and not wanting to play a Latina stereotype:

“I had been auditioning for about a year, and a lot of the roles I went out for didn’t feel…you kind of know, as an actor, when you get a script, if you’re like, “Can I actually play this? Is a casting director going to put me in this role? I’m not going to play this. I wouldn’t cast me as this.” You go out for it anyway because you want to get the exposure, and you want people to see you and feel like you’re doing something with your life. [Laughs.] This role came along, and it was the perfect fit. Everything about it—I had her on the surface of who I am.

“[I also liked] the fact that she was Latina, and they weren’t trying to push any stereotype on her. She just was Latina, which is how I feel. I’m a Brazilian—full blood, parents born and raised, and I lived there for a little bit—but I didn’t grow up there. I’m not as Latina as sometimes these castings demand you to be—this “urban” idea of what a Latina is. I’m American; I was born and raised in America, and I don’t want to fake who I am to fit a stereotype. This came along, and I felt like I didn’t have to try to be anything that I’m not. Obviously, I’m putting on a character, but I’m not faking anything. I just felt really strongly about her. I grew up watching Gossip Girl and The O.C., and I looked up to Blair Waldorf and Summer Roberts.”

Camila also revealed that she relates to Veronica and her mother’s struggle to make a new life for themselves in Riverdale:

“That’s something that I’ve experienced too, growing up—when you start to see your parents struggle. The first time you start to see that, when they show that side to you—whether it’s financial trouble or there’s a divorce, whatever it is in your family—there’s going to be a point where something’s going to start to fall apart. When you see that and your parents going through that, it’s like you pull back the curtain. You’re seeing the backstage, as opposed to the front stage. You see them as people. The fact that just because they’re older or more experienced in life doesn’t mean they’ve learned from all their mistakes, doesn’t mean they’re changed. They’re continually dealing with issues they’ve been dealing with their entire life! And some people never learn. At a certain age you can’t really change; you just are who you are. I think Veronica sees that her parents are very much as lost as she is. It’s a coming-of-age story for everyone. Everyone’s growing. It’s not just the kids.”

As for which relationships she’d like to see Veronica explore, Camila said:

“I do think Veronica’s really good for Archie. I know I’m biased!”

“I feel like they’re exploring this darker side of Archie, and he’s dealing with the darkness of Riverdale. I think Veronica plays into that. She’s seen a darker world; she’s not from Riverdale. She’s seen some shit. She’s been through shit. If anyone can help him through whatever he’s going through, it’s her. She’s kind of the strength in his life—or she’s stability. She can also recognize his…I think both of them are a little bit impulsive and a little bit unstable.”

Riverdale airs Thursdays on The CW at 9:00 P.M. ET.

‘Riverdale’ Starring Cole Sprouse Picked Up by The CW

Posted on 1 min read 52 views

Cole Sprouse is coming back to the small screen!

The former Suite Life of Zack and Cody actor is set to star in a new series titled Riverdale, which was just officially picked up by The CW.

According to Deadline, the series is: “Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters,” and is “a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.”

Cole, who will play Jughead, wrote about his new show on his instagram page, saying: “We interrupt Botswana’s scheduled programming to bring you this announcement: #Riverdale has been picked up! Catch #Jughead on the CW. A return to acting is gunna be a bit strange, but Im doing it with a good group of people. Alright, round two start.”

Also starring in the series are Lili Reinhart, Ashleigh Murray, Luke Perry, KJ Apa, Madelaine Petsch, Camila Mendes, Marisol Nichols, and Mädchen Amick.

Congrats to Cole on his new role!
