Shailene Woodley talks activism and arrest in Marie Claire UK: “This world isn’t something to take for granted”

Posted on 2 min read 41 views

Actress/activist Shailene Woodley is the new cover star of Marie Claire UK‘s October 2017 issue, where she opens up about her sustainability activism and her October 2016 arrest for protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

On her arrest:

“I was strip-searched. Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over. They were looking for drugs in my ass,” Shailene says.

“When you’re in a jail cell and they shut that door, you realise no one can save you,” she says. “If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die. You are a caged animal.”

On her long-standing interest in climate change and sustainability:

“I was the weirdo girl in high school who tried to get everyone to recycle,” Shailene says.

“This world isn’t something to take for granted. The only way to address climate change and these radical, detrimental policies is for us, as citizens, to shift our lifestyles. People are too comfortable. We’re complacent in many ways. We need to be willing to get uncomfortable.”

On her new organization, Up To Us

“There’s a misconception that, in order to start a movement, you need to have gone to college, or have a “name”, or look a certain way. But you don’t. We want to eradicate that narrative,” she says on her organization Up To Us, which helps communities and organizations connect.

“Look at your wallet and recognise that every dollar you spend is either a vote towards the destruction of our planet or towards its empowerment.”

“There’s nothing worth fighting for more than each other,” Shailene says. “The planet is going to be fine. It’s humans who aren’t going to be OK. We’re broken. That’s why the world is where it is. The way you heal is with love and empathy and compassion. Take politics out of it. Vote with your money.”

On Creating Change:

“None of us are perfect. I use more plastic than I need to. I’ll buy products from corporations that I don’t agree with. To me, the biggest shift we can make is the mindfulness around these things. That’s the catalyst for change. We must wake up every morning and ask ourselves, “How can I do more? How am I willing to shift my lifestyle to actually create the change I complain about?” Now, all of a sudden you’re empowered, you’re passionate, you have a fuel beneath your feet to move forward in a way that’s conducive not only for your own personal life but also for the world as well.”

Shailene Woodley talks ‘Snowden’ during the Zurich Film Festival

Posted on 2 min read 30 views

Actress Shailene Woodley stepped out in Zurich, Switzerland on Saturday (September 24) to attend a press conference for her new film Snowden during the Zurich Film Festival.

During the conference, Shailene sat down with director Oliver Stone and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt to discuss the biopic where she stars as Edward Snowden‘s girlfriend Lindsay Mills.

“When I heard that Oliver Stone was making this movie, I actually wrote him a letter,” Shailene said in a recent interview about wanting to work on the film.

“I did ask to audition for it but the point of the letter wasn’t to be a part of the movie; it was just to say, ‘Thank you for making a movie like this.’”

“The thing that I fell in love with about the script is that for me, as someone who did a lot of research on the information that was disclosed, I didn’t know that Ed Snowden was a conservative before he was more liberal,” she said.

“I didn’t know that he wanted to be part of the military before he had any interest in joining the NSA or CIA. [Being an agent] wasn’t on his radar. It was sort of a Plan B.”

“We are so quick to judge in our society but so often we are only being fed one narrative, and with Ed Snowden, we’ve only been fed the narrative of mainstream media and independent journalists.”

“We’ve never had the luxury of being fed the narrative of the historical events that led him to do what he did. I think that’s what this movie does. Thinking back to the first time I heard his name and the effect it had on me to now, my judgments and beliefs have shifted a little bit because I understand the backstory. So there’s a certain sense of empathy that I didn’t have before.”

Shailene Woodley attends ‘White Bird in a Blizzard’ Hollywood Premiere

Posted on 1 min read 38 views

A

ctress Shailene Woodley stepped out in Hollywood on Tuesday evening (October 21) for the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie White Bird in a Blizzard at the ArcLight Hollywood theatre.

Rocking a black blazer over a simple white tee, the 22-year-old Divergent star was all smiles as she joined her co-stars for the screening of the new drama.

In the movie: “Kat Connors (Shailene) is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve, a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears – just as Kat is discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock, for the loss. In fact, it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it…”

White Bird in a Blizzard is available NOW on Demand and on iTunes, and will be released in theatres on Friday (October 24)!
