As a part of the entertainment industry, Ashley reveals that she has had her fair share of rejection, and has even been told that she needs to lose weight: “I was just told I was too fat for a part,” she said in her interview. “I’m a size 2! I cried for 30 minutes, but then you have to let it roll off your shoulders or it could cause a serious eating disorder. A lot of people in this industry hear they need to lose weight more times than they should. It does make you stronger, though. Because if you let that affect you, you can’t be in this industry—you’d go crazy.”
Ashley also revealed that she’s not a fan of Photoshop or altering images on social media, saying: “I saw photos from a shoot of myself just the other day and thought, What the hell? That doesn’t even look like me! I was so disappointed.”
“I hate to think that girls are like, ‘She’s so skinny! Her skin is so perfect!’ I have pimples just like they do.” To prove it, the outspoken actress posted a photo of herself with dots of zit cream on her face on Instagram. Why? “Because I wanted to show people I’m not perfect—no one is.” She said.
Being in the spotlight has also shown Ashley the downside to fame, from loss of privacy to the risks that come from young fame.
“Now with everyone having a camera on their phones and Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, every moment of your life can be documented by anyone who happens to see you,” she said. “It’s annoying, but it comes with the job.”
“I definitely see why some people can go a little nuts,” she said. “Being successful at such a young age—and I feel I never got to that level, but I’ve seen friends who have—is very difficult because you’re being told yes a thousand times more than you’re being told no. You’re making a lot of money, there are a lot of temptations, and there are no consequences no matter what you’re doing.”
As for what’s to come in the new episodes of Pretty Little Liars, Ashley revealed she’s excited to see the changes that have happened to her character Hanna, with the season picking up 5 years in the future.
“Hanna has graduated college and has moved on,” she said. “She’s in a new relationship and is engaged. She’s very confident in who she is. She works in fashion now and is the most successful out of all of the girls.”
As for Hanna’s relationship with Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), spoiler alert! – the two are no longer together, and Hanna has moved on to a new man.
“But I’m excited for people to hate that they’re not together,” Ashley laughed. “There’s going to be twists and turns in her new relationship, and Caleb’s going to be there. He’s very much a part of her life. Fans are going to be surprised at how everything has turned out, but I think it will be a fun journey for them.”
