The Vampire Diaries is officially coming to an end.

While making an appearance at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 23), the cast and crew of the hit CW series announced that the upcoming eighth season of the show will be it’s last.

“It’s bittersweet and emotional,” co-creator Julie Plec told the audience during the show’s panel, which also featured Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Michael Malarkey, Matt Davis, and writer/producer Kevin Williamson.

As for what’s to come in the show’s new season, Plec revealed that there will be a new villain for the season, and it will be unlike anything the show has ever had before.
