Before dropping his new single If I Can’t Have You on Friday, singer Shawn Mendes dropped by the SiriusXM studios to chat about his newest song, how he feels about appearing on SNL this weekend, why he loves Billie Eilish, and more.
“I mean the song is pretty self-explanatory,” Shawn said when describing his new single. |The main lyric is that ‘everything means nothing if I can’t have you,’ which is a little dramatic but I guess when you’re really stuck on someone, sometimes it feels like that.”
As for why he chose to release the song, Shawn said:
“I’ve been making so much music in the last six months that I have so many songs and this one is just one that felt so exciting. And I’m back on tour and I just wanted to give something for people to dance to and just have fun and listen to in the summer. And I feel like this is the song for that.”
Shawn will be making an appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live tonight (May 4), where he will be the music guest alongside this week’s host Adam Sandler.
“My second time doing SNL. I feel good, I feel really good,” Shawn said. “I feel more nervous just about the song release in general than playing SNL, cause I feel pretty excited about that.”
“I met Adam Sandler a few times and he’s been really, really nice to me so it should be fun,” he added. “I get starstruck by him.”
The singer also dished on Billie Eilish, explaining why he’s so impressed with her:
“Billie Eilish is everywhere right now and she’s just absolutely crushing it,” he said.
“I think Billie Eilish is so unbelievably incredible. She is just completely paving her own way and doesn’t care about anything, and she just cares about making music that she loves and making music that is different and exciting. And I think she’s incredible for that.”
Shawn is taking over SiriusXM Hits 1’s Weekend Countdown this weekend. You can catch his segment when it rebroadcasts at 3 PM ET and 7PM ET on Saturday, May 4 and at 4 AM, 9 AM, 1 PM, and 9PM ET on Sunday, May 5.
