Taylor Swift talks ‘Cats’ Special Effects: “It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen.”

While Taylor Swift fans eagerly await her seventh studio album, Swifties also have another project to look forward to — Taylor’s role in the upcoming film, Cats.

In the movie, which is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s Broadway musical of the same name, Taylor plays a cat named Bombalurina alongside other stars like Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Cordon, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo.

Taylor recently spoke about her latest film role with Entertainment Weekly, where she discussed why she decided to join the project and how she transformed into a cat for the role.

“Obviously, I loved the show, I loved the music, and one of the things that made Cats so special when it came out in the ’80s was that it was presented in a way people hadn’t seen before,” Taylor said. “[But] what about this is going to give people that same awe factor [that] we’re seeing something completely original? I was like, ‘Are we gonna be in the Lycra catsuits with fur glued to us? Like, what are we talking about here?’”

Instead of Lycra suits, the cats in the film will be created through digital effects added in post-production.

“They add digital fur to us,” Taylor said. “They’re completely human performances. It’s not animated. And it’s not motion capture. It’s somehow this new way that hasn’t been done before. And they’re giving us a tail that moves naturally, and ears and whiskers. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen.”

As for playing a cat on-screen, Taylor said:

“I just fully committed and threw myself into the process and had the most fun. We had this thing called ‘cat school’ that was a class where you could learn about how to create the motions of cats, how to think like they think, how to sense things the way that they do, carry yourself the way a cat would. I learned a lot.”

This isn’t Taylor’s first time appearing on the big-screen, the singer has previously appeared in movies like Valentine’s Day, The Lorax, and The Giver.

Cats is currently scheduled to be released on December 20, 2019.
