Ariana Grande to star in Netflix Musical ‘Prom’

Update: According to Billboard, the shooting schedule for the film conflicts with Ariana Grande‘s touring schedule and she will no longer be involved in the project.

Ariana Grande is teaming up with Ryan Murphy once again for a new Netflix musical, Prom.

The singer/actress was announced as one of the cast members in Murphy’s upcoming film on Tuesday (June 25), joining other stars like Meryl Streep, James Cordon, Nicole Kidman, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Andrew Rannells.

According to Deadline, the film is an adaptation of the Tony-nominated stage musical The Prom, in which Ariana will star as Alyssa, a popular daughter of the head of the PTA.

In Prom, Streep will play Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony winner who teams with Corden’s Barry Glickman in a flop musical about Eleanor Roosevelt. After career-ending reviews, they decide — along with Broadway babies Kidman as Angie Dickinson and Rannells (Book of Mormon) as Trent Oliver — to champion a cause to rehabilitate their careers. They find one in Emma, a high school senior in Indiana who isn’t allowed to take her girlfriend to the prom. A nationwide search led by casting director Alexa Fogel is on to fill the role of Emma.

The movie will reportedly start filming in December, and is anticipated to be released in the fall of 2020.

Ariana is additionally set to help produce the soundtrack alongside Murphy and her manager Scooter Braun.

This isn’t the first time Ariana has worked with Ryan Murphy — the two previously worked together on FOX’s 2015 series Scream Queens.

In the meantime, Ariana has been busy on the road over the past few months on her Sweetner World Tour. Ariana is set to play her next show in Toronto, Canada on Wednesday (June 26) before heading off to Indianapolis for a show this Saturday (June 29).
