The first look at Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming adaptation of Little Women is here!
Little Women is set in Civil War-era Boston, and follows four sisters, Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and Amy March (Florence Pugh), who are living with their mother in New England and struggle to support themselves and keep their household running after their family loses its fortune.
“Jo is a girl with a boy’s name, Laurie is a boy with a girl’s name,” Greta told Vanity Fair about Saorise and Timothée’s characters. “In some ways they are each other’s twins.”
“They find each other before they’ve committed to a gender,” she said. “It wouldn’t be wrong to call Saoirse handsome and Timothée beautiful. Both have a slightly androgynous quality that makes them perfect for these characters.”
As for Emma’s character Meg, Greta said: “Meg, like so many people, just has an irrepressible desire to fit in with the fancy girls that she’s so different from.”
Greta also spoke about working with Saorise again after 2017’s Lady Bird, saying:
“I’m so blessed to work with [Saoirse] twice. She’s such a filmmaker as an actor. She’s like a barometer of … that truth that rings true.”
As for Soairse getting to work with Greta again, the actress said: “In the truest sense of the word, I just idolize her.”
Little Women is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2019.
