After opening up about her struggles with mental health issues like an eating disorder, actress Troian Bellisario is revealing what mental health advice she’d give to her younger self.
In a new video for the Child Mind Institute‘s #MyYoungerSelf anti-stigma campaign, the Pretty Little Liars star details what she’d tell her younger self, including that it’s perfectly normal to have a wide range of emotions.
“If I were to give advice to my younger self, I would probably say that you’re going to have a lot of feelings,” Troian says in the video.
“I dealt a lot with issues of rage, and depression, and anxiety, and control, and they kind of manifested into an eating disorder and an anxiety disorder.”
“I guess I would just say that it’s totally normal for you to feel like some days you might be overwhelmingly sad, or some days you might be very angry,” she continues. “Some days you might be really happy. All of these feelings are real, and they’re legitimate, and they’re yours. You just need to give them time and space.
“You don’t need to feel like you need to hide them or you need to push them away, because they’re your feelings and you are an incredible person, you’re a sensitive person and there’s space for them. There’s space for you to feel these things and nobody’s going to be disappointed in you or upset that you might be having a blue day. They just want what’s best for you so you don’t have to take it out on yourself or hurt yourself in any way because you are loved, you are worthy of being loved.
“And slowly, it might not feel like it right now, but things will change. Things will change and you will grow and you will experience different things and I’m really proud of you.”
